The 10 people on every escape room team
By Leslie Kell
- The Leader
Most of the time the leader is the one who has done a room before, whether online or live. Even if this person has not done an escape room before, you will still see them delegating responsibilities. Typically, the leader is the one who takes the clipboard in with them and the phone. The leader of the group may say something like this: “Okay, you search the room and you get on a lock! When you find a clue, let me know what it is so that we can solve it, and I will write it all down so we can keep track.”
- The distracted one
The distracted one is the one person on your team who thinks everything in the room is a clue. This is the person who wants everything to be a combination. He or she gets distracted by everything in the room and tries to turn it into a code. This team member will also be counting everything in the room to try creating a code out of thin air. He or she may say something like this: “Guys! Guys! I don’t know what this is but try a lock!”
- The confused one
This team member is the one who has been in the room with you for 30 minutes but still has no clue what to look for, or where to look for it. With the confused team member, you really have to be specific as to which code opened which lock. Even if you escape the room, the confused team member is still not sure how you did it. This is something the confused one might say: “Wait, what does that even mean?!” or “How on earth were we supposed to know that?”
- Mr. or Mrs. Needs to be right
Even when they don’t have the answer, this person will convince you that he or she knows the right answer and because this person is so confident, you naturally will believe him or her. This might also be the person who refuses to use hints or call for clues because they don’t need any help. Mr. or Mrs. right would most likely say, “Guys, I know what to do, you just need to trust me!”
- The timid one
The timid team member is one who will be walking around watching everyone unlock locks. This team member is not really sure what to do in the room, but would rather just be the spectator. You might also find this person sitting down on the floor and not really sure how to get involved in the action! You may hear the timid team member say, “I’m just here for support.”
- The one who’s excited about everything(The happy Dancer)
If you’re a happy dancer, you’re the one who gets excited every time a lock gets opened and clue is found! The happy dancer is the one who tries to get everyone excited and enthusiastic about anything that is happening in the room. It’s easy to recognize the happy dancer because they will be the one who can’t stand still while the cluemaster is presenting the rules for the room because they are too excited. A happy dancer might say, “Get the lock open, get the lock open!” or “Can we go in the room now?”
- The Parent
The parent is really easy to pinpoint because they will be the one who tries picking up the mess in the room behind all of the participants. The clues will be all over the room and the parent will be the one cleaning everything up and ends up ‘re-hiding’ the clues. The parent might also be the one organizing all of the clues so that everyone can find them. You’ll probably hear the parent say, “Don’t lose this.” or “put everything into this pile.”
- Panicked One
You’ll recognize the panicked one because every time a lock is opened and the rest of the team is yelling with excitement, the panicked one will yell in fear. The panicked one will also be the one constantly checking the time and reminding the rest of the team how much time is left. This person will probably spend more time worrying about the time rather than opening locks. The panicked one is the person pacing the floor saying” Oh jeez! Hurry up guys! Only 20 minutes left!”
- Lock Hog
This one may be fairly obvious, but the lock hog is the team member who will be opening every lock they can. For example, one team member starts to put in the combination on a lock, but suddenly the lock hog wants to be in on the action. Before you know it, the lock hog is right in the way and squeezes in between the team member working on the lock, and the lock itself. Once the lock is opened, the log hog team member takes all the credit for finding the clue.
You’ll know someone is the lock hog when you hear them say constantly: “I am the master at unlocking locks, so when you get the combination, just let me know, and I will get all the locks open! If I can’t get the combo, I can definitely hack the lock anyway.”
- Ultimate Clue Finder
The ultimate clue finder is the one that never sits still in the escape room. Everyone else is opening locks, but this person takes it upon himself to find every clue possible that could be hidden in the room. You’ll see the ultimate clue finder running their hands over the walls, checking under every piece of furniture, picking things up and probably making more of a mess than anyone else. This person may seem distracted, but he or she is actually just determined to escape by finding everything possible! You might hear the ultimate clue finder say something like: “Hey look what I found!” or “Hey Hey did you guys see this?!”
In the end, every team will look a little different. The best part about any team is that every person will have a different skillset that overall helps the group succeed, or at least get close! Think you have the perfect team in mind? Get them all together and book your room now!
