An effective leader is a key component to any successful team. It’s the leader that inspires the group to work together and be the best they can be. One quality of a great leader is the ability to encourage the team members to make independent decisions all while considering what is best for the group as a whole.
As a leader of the team, whether you’re a supervisor, or manager, it’s important to find activities that will benefit the group, and more so, improve the group; that’s where escape rooms come in. Escape rooms are a fantastic activity to foster better teamwork within the group, as well as inspire new team leaders to rise to the occasion. In an escape room, players spend the hour thinking outside the box to come up with creative solutions to various problems. This is a perfect training ground for anyone wanting to spur on their team to become good leaders.
In an article from Forbes they describe eight essential leadership qualities as sincere enthusiasm, integrity, great communication, loyalty, managerial competence, decisiveness, empowerment, and charisma. Many of these qualities can be found in escape rooms, making them a great option for team building exercises. Escape room players are typically full of enthusiasm and have the ability to fire up their team members on the job as well. Forbes puts it this way, “when leaders are sincerely enthusiastic and passionate, [it’s] contagious.” What could be a better way to teach leaders to be enthusiastic than by putting them into a new and exciting experience, like an escape room?
When it comes to integrity, escape rooms give an opportunity for the players to show integrity by giving credit where credit is due. Some players may solve puzzles more quickly and a leader is one who would acknowledge those accomplishments within the escape room experience. Another leadership quality that is found in an escape room is excellent communication. Communication is required for a group to make their escape because many puzzles are easier to solve with more than one person working on them. Likewise, a leader needs to be able to communicate effectively with their team members and get everyone on the same thought process, to achieve a common goal. Decisiveness is another quality that is found in an escape room. When playing an Epic Escape Game, we offer our players three phone clues. It’s important to use these clues wisely to help the team escape, and a leader must be decisive in keeping the team on track and make the choice to use these phone clues.
These are just a few of the leadership characteristics that are evident when playing escape rooms.Playing an escape room is an excellent way to encourage players to communicate effectively, be decisive, to show integrity and enthusiasm, and overall to be great leaders.
